Taking Responsibility and Ownership For Your Life and Your Circumstances
October 15th, 2009
What does it mean to take responsibility and ownership for your life and your circumstances? Why do we deflect responsibility and distract ourselves from taking ownership? What is the consequence of accepting this responsibility? First, let’s look at the definitions of responsibility and ownership.
- When you take responsibility for yourself, you accept moral, legal and mental accountability for your actions and conduct. (You make a choice and you accept the consequences.)
- When you take ownership of yourself and your choices, you accept that the outcome of your life and your circumstances belong to you. (You recognize that your actions are your own and no one else is to blame.)
We have all wanted to blame others, at one time or another, for something that has gone wrong in our lives. It is important to remember, when you blame others you give away your power.
We may also become distracted by trying to fix other people’s problems and pretending that we exist only to work, sleep and eat. These distractions are a waste of time and take away from our own progress. Instead, take time to reflect on who you are and what you want out of your life.
The main consequence of accepting responsibility and ownership is that you get to consciously shape your life. You hold the power to create whatever it is you desire. When you find the courage to face yourself, you can begin to ask the important questions like:
- What do I want to do with my life?
- Who do I want to be?
- What do I need to do to accomplish this?
You will no doubt have to take a long, hard, honest look at yourself, and it may be uncomfortable.
Once you are aware you hold the power to transform your life, you can make good choices, creating opportunities, propelling you wherever you want to go. You hold the key to your future. Whatever you want to accomplish can be done if you accept that it is in you to do so.
Most people will never fully recognize their power within and will merely exist in life. These people will never reach their full potential and will only find blame and distress.
You, on the other hand, will find opportunity. You will evolve, create, and contribute. You will succeed in whichever direction you choose because you have taken responsibility and ownership of yourself and your circumstances and you will unleash your power within.
